I teach general piano lessons since 2010.With every new student our mutual journey into the world of music begins from the very basic stage; we begin with discussing student's proper sitting position at the instrument, basic introduction sessions on the general buildup of the instrument, its keyboard layout, and proceed, gradually, to the notation symbols on the music staff introduction to the student. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to playing piano, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will ...

Neguine teaches piano to my two children, ages 8 and 6, and she’s been wonderful. She comes to our house and immediately the house is a calm friendly place to learn music. She’s patient with my kids who love piano but are still little, and she has a good sense of humor when they want to try something a little quirky. They also have been making great strides with sightreading, and their eagerness to learn more has only increased. Neguine also does not rush the kids: If a child needs to repeat part of a lesson for another week as she is good about making sure kids reinforce what they’re learning, which is something I appreciate, and my kids have learned to appreciate that too. I highly recommend her!

Karen obviously loves the piano & guitar. She’s probably an excellent teacher for those instruments. Why do I say that? That’s what she talked about! She spent half my lesson trying to convince me to learn one of those instruments. Could work on listening skills! Not even sure if she owns a set of bongos herself. Didn’t start teaching me anything until last 10 min & then I had to leave early anyway. So 50 min out of 60 and about 5 I actually learned a few things I could have been practicing for at least 30 min of class. Use her if you want to learn something else other than bongos.

Ms. Karen did a pretty good job, she had ideas for the lesson and provided ideas for the next lesson. She went out of her way to help me with this new idea---------"music" and "reading music." If there was any short fall in the lesson it was on my side and my preparation failings. I have no problem recommending Ms. Karen to others. Regards, JC

Extremely knowledgeable! Karen is a superb guitar instructor. Honestly, I was struggling. Discouraged! She helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and moved me from beginner to intermediate in a matter of months. If you’re getting tired of learning from YouTube and smart phone apps, let Karen kick start your guitar playing. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks Karen!!

Stephen's a great instructor both from a technical and personable perspective.

He's got a cornucopia of musical knowledge that's evident from how speaks to how he teaches. If you like any film score, chances are he knows how to play it.

Speaking as a beginner, I can say he's been very patient and knows a bunch of exercises and books to learn everything thing from theory to practical pieces to finger exercises.

He provides constructive guidance on what you're doing wrong, and I'm happy to see myself improve under his tutorage. (oh and if you're a sci-fi fan, you'll have a lot in common with him)

I am a husband, father, biocellular chemist, musician/recording artist, teacher, and performer in various genre. Piano was my first learned instrument (~30 years playing experience). Teaching music supplements all that is natural, perfect and me. I look forward to helping students learn technique and build confidence for when they may decide to perform or produce new music.

My standard teaching session aims directly at the common essentials of music and provides a combination of 1) chord and scale training, 2) an emphasis on contrasting rhythms and dynamics that give rise to genre and most common-day song structure, and 3) teaching students to play new songs (the student can request songs they would like to learn; I have demo materials and recommendations to assist). Using this trifecta approach, I have successfully taught learners with a broad variance of prior knowledge and aspiration to accomplish their goals. Together, my methods ensure that each student receives translatable

Learning Piano in Boston

by Eunhye J. - Boston piano teacher

Greetings! My name is Eunhye and I teach piano lessons in Boston, Massachusetts.

Boston attracts musical talents from all over the world and has been home to many Grammy winners and nominees. It provides a rich musical environment to learn piano or music in general.

Let’s take a look at some resources that may help your piano learning in Boston.

  1. Find Your Own Keys!
    • Keyboard/Digital Piano If you are planning to purchase your keyboard/digital piano, Guitar Center is a great place to start. There are two branches in Back Bay and Fenway, which are easily accessible by T. The Natick store (321 Speen St, Natick, MA 01760) is more convenient for Framingham, Wellesley, and Weston residents. Various brands of keyboards
...

are on display for you to try and the staff can help you to find the right model for your needs.

*Tip: Get a velocity sensitive or touch-sensitive keyboard with weighted keys. These features ensure musical expression and you will enjoy playing piano more. Make sure that it has more than 66 keys as well!

  • Grand/Upright Piano If you are looking for an acoustic piano, visit the M. Steinert & Sons showroom located in Downtown Boston (at Boston Common, Boylston Station, 162 Boylston St, Boston, MA). I suggest making an appointment to get full assistance and plan for about a half an hour to try several pianos. Once you bring your piano at home, be sure to maintain it! Sudden changes in temperature and humidity can ruin the acoustics of piano. Call a piano tuner every six months!

*Tip: Did you know you can practice on a grand piano at the Harvard Musical Association at Boston Commons for free? HMS offers musicians the opportunity practice for 1 ½ hours at a time without cost. Reservation is a must. More info here: http://hmaboston.org/rooms/.

  1. Get Inspired! I recommend checking out a variety of live concerts that will nurture and inspire you as you’re taking piano lessons in Boston!
  • Venues Berklee Performance Center (BPC): This is the hot place for all contemporary music of all kinds – rock, world, jazz, pop, folk, classical, and more. You name it! Many promising Berklee students’ concerts are held here, as well as world-class musicians. (https://www.berklee.edu/BPC)

Symphony Hall: This is the home of the historic Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). It’s located only a few blocks away from BPC. Although it is primarily a classical venue, Boston Pops and jazz giants regularly perform here. Fun fact: Near Symphony Hall on Westland Avenue there is a building that used to be a hotel (now an apartment called the Parkside) where Stravinsky stayed and worked during his Boston residency.

Clubs: Hang out with your friends and listen to great music! Scullers at the Hilton Hotel, Regattabar at the Charles Hotel, Lilypad, Ryles Jazz Club, Lizard Lounge, the Beat Hotel in Cambridge, and the Beehive in South Boston are among your many options.

  • Festivals Beantown Jazz Festival: https://www.berklee.edu/beantownjazz Tanglewood: http://www.bso.org/brands/tanglewood/features/2015-tanglewood-season.aspx African Festival of Boston: http://www.africanfestivalofboston.com JP Porchfest: http://www.jpporchfest.org

  • Enjoy Free Recitals at Colleges Berklee College of Music: You will be surprised by how diverse Berklee’s own music scene is! The annual piano concert hosted by the piano department features both faculty and students. (www.berklee.edu)

New England Conservatory (NEC): Third Stream, a synthesis of classical music and jazz improvisation, started here. The finest classical musicians, jazz musicians, and musicians from other traditions showcase classical or jazz music and the combination of those genres here. (http://necmusic.edu)

  1. Explore Books and Materials Now that you are inspired to work on your own piano skills, you’ll want to get some instructional books, scores, and other supplementary materials. If you’re taking piano lessons in Boston already, your teacher can guide you. But here are some additional places to check out:

Music Espresso (295 Huntington Ave #212, Boston, MA) is NEC’s music bookstore that has been serving the New England community for a long time. You can find various method books, popular music scores for piano, jazz giant’s solo transcriptions, and imported classical scores. Learn more at www.musicespresso.com.

The Berklee Bookstore (1090 Boylston St, Boston, MA) sells traditional piano method books. But the beauty of this store is in its pop/jazz oriented instructional book selections. Many of them are written by Berklee faculty and published by Berklee Press. Some introductory course books (Ear Training and Harmony) can be also very helpful if you are inclined to learn jazz, pop, and other contemporary styles.

Now you are all set to go! You and your piano teacher will go through your musical journey together and it will be a success! Good luck!
